Writer-in-residence

Marcie Good first came to the Dodson Hotel in 2004 as a magazine writer and learned about tenant empowerment, bottom-up organization, and random interactions. The Power of Many, published in Vancouver magazine, was one of several pieces she wrote about people in the Downtown Eastside through a 17-year career as a writer, editor and documentary maker for various regional and national media. She is now helping Anhart tell the stories of building affordable housing and supporting community development around the world.

I love seeing people move into one of our buildings and make it their own.

Previously she worked as office manager for an immigration law firm, where she used her Cantonese, Mandarin and English language skills to communicate with clients, and at a private education group based in Vancouver. Maggie moved to Canada from Hong Kong in 1995 with her husband and two small children, and completed an accounting program at Capilano University.

I enjoy working for Anhart because it gives less fortunate people hope and that makes the world more positive for all.

Vy and her team at Ducks in a Row provide executive administration services to Anhart. She first came to Community Builders in 2014, curious about material on the website on complexity theory. She was familiar with the theory from her studies in neuroscience and philosophy at UBC, and interested in how the concept could be applied to social housing and international development. In 2018 she travelled to Vietnam to meet with social entrepreneurs and to expand the SVI program for Anhart Global Villages.

I’m really interested in the way that bottom-up processes create opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise be available in current systems. Emergence gives us a new way of looking at things and novel ways of solving problems like affordable housing.
